A desire for a more solidarity-driven future
The -able was born out of a desire to shape a more inclusive economic future, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, no matter where they come from. The way we treat each other and the products we choose to buy makes a difference. By shopping at The -able, you are actively supporting a future built on solidarity and equality.
Impactful corporate gifts
One of the most important aspects of The -able's mission is to raise awareness of the skills of people forced to flee and to support them in earning a livelihood through their beautiful crafts. We achieve this particularly through collaborations with companies that wish to replace traditional Christmas gifts with something more meaningful. By choosing a gift from The -able, your company can embrace social responsibility and offer a gift that carries a story and makes a tangible difference. Will you join us?
Here's what companies that have chosen our Christmas gifts for their employees are saying:
Countries where our artisans live or originate from
Lebanon
... has the highest number of refugees per capita in the world, with around 1.5 million Syrian refugees. At the same time, the country faces serious political and economic challenges, where inflation has reached extreme heights, and many are struggling to cover basic needs such as food and medicine. That is why we work both with Lebanese artisans as well as Palestinians and Syrians in the country.
Syria
The Syrian conflict, which began in 2011, has resulted in one of the most extensive humanitarian disasters in recent times. Over 6.6 million Syrians have been internally displaced, and millions more have fled to neighboring countries in particular. That is why we work both with local Syrian craftsmen in Syria and Syrians in neighboring countries and Europe.
Afghanistan
Especially since taking power, the situation has further worsened in Afghanistan, which was already struggling with political unrest and poverty, which is now driving more people to flee. We support Afghan artisans in preserving their traditions and creating new opportunities for income both internally in Afghanistan and in new countries.
Iran
... has hosted millions of Afghan refugees since the 1980s, when the conflict in Afghanistan began. At the same time, the country is in the midst of a significant social movement known as the "Woman, Life, Freedom" revolution. The movement arose as a reaction to the limited rights of women and the general oppression in the country. We work with Iranian refugees in Greece and Afghans who were born and raised in Iran but fled due to the poor conditions for Afghans in Iran.
Ukraine
The war in Ukraine, which began in 2022, has resulted in millions of people being displaced from their homes, both internally and externally. We work to support Ukrainian artisans locally in Ukraine so that they can preserve their culture and create a future despite the challenges they face.
Greece
... especially since 2015 has been an important entry route for migrants and asylum seekers, especially for those fleeing from war-torn countries such as Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. Many people arrive on the Greek islands as their first destination in the EU, often staying in overcrowded camps while they wait for asylum processing. That is why we work with many NGOs in Greece to secure dignified and well-paid jobs for people seeking asylum in Greece.
Palestine
Palestinians face massive challenges of forced displacement, loss of life and destruction of their homes that have only escalated extremely in the past year. Despite these conditions, we continue to work closely with local artisans to preserve their culture and support them in their efforts to maintain an income in extremely difficult circumstances - both in the West Bank and for Palestinians in new countries.
Cameroon
Cameroon has experienced significant internal displacement since 2016 due to violence and conflict in the English-speaking regions. At the same time, the country hosts refugees from neighboring countries. We support asylum seekers from Cameroon in Greece in several projects.
South Sudan & Uganda
The conflict in South Sudan, which broke out in 2013, has led to over 2.2 million people seeking safety in neighboring countries such as Uganda. We collaborate with local NGOs in Uganda that support women from South Sudan in Bidibidi - one of the world's largest refugee camps.
